EShop selections

September has been another exciting month for new releases on the Switch eShop, with plenty of new offers worthy of your time.

These awards aim to celebrate the best of Nintendo’s digital store, giving a little love and attention to games that could so easily be missing from Switch’s ever-growing library.

So let’s get started. Here are the best Switch eShop games for September 2021!

Honorable mentions:

While these titles haven’t quite made our top three this month, they’re still worth checking out:

The Forgotten City - Cloud Version (Switch eShop)The Forgotten City - Cloud Version (Switch eShop)

Editor: Dear villagers / Developer: Modern storyteller

Release date: September 23, 2021 (United States) / September 23, 2021 (UK / EU)

Third place this month is The Forgotten City, which arrived on Switch as a “cloud version”. This mystery adventure is brilliant storytelling work with great writing and voice acting and a truly gripping story. A well presented and brilliant time loop game, that would be a super easy recommendation on other platforms, but cloud gaming naturally comes with its own risks.

If you have a strong and stable internet connection, and you don’t feel put off by the occasional cloud-related technical glitch (and are also happy that one day your game will simply disappear), then the gameplay itself. is absolutely worth your time.

Eastward (Switch eShop)Eastward (Switch eShop)

Editor: Ritter fish / Developer: Pixpil games

Release date: September 16, 2021 (United States) / September 16, 2021 (UK / EU)

Jumping to second place we have Eastward, a memorable Zelda with dungeons full of treasures, enemies, and puzzles to master. In our review, we praised the game for its creative gameplay sequences, touching and moving story, and excellent art direction, all combined to create a great experience.

The only word of warning we have is that it can be a pretty slow affair at times, but if that doesn’t put you off, we would definitely recommend it. And hey, so many NL team members enjoyed their time with her that she earned second place on this list!

Castlevania Advance Collection (Switch eShop)Castlevania Advance Collection (Switch eShop)

Editor: Konami / Developer: Konami

Release date: September 23, 2021 (United States) / September 24, 2021 (UK / EU)

Castlevania Advance Collection, which is unsurprisingly a collection of Castlevania games that appeared on the good old Game Boy Advance.

You’ll find Castlevania: Circle of the Moon, Harmony of Dissonance, Aria of Sorrow, and Vampire’s Kiss all included in the pack, and if we’re being honest we probably would have voted this game in our top three just for Aria from Grief alone. While the games share some similarities, we found them different enough to be worth checking out (or replaying if you’ve tried them before).

Plus, being able to legitimately grab four old Castlevania games these days for under $ 20 is a steal, so download it and get started!

How we decide our eShop selects the top three: At the end of each month, the Nintendo Life team votes for their favorite titles from a list of games selected by the editorial team. To be eligible for this list, these games must have been released as a digital-only Nintendo Switch eShop title in that particular month and must have been reviewed on Nintendo Life; we select qualifying games based on their evaluation scores.

Staff are then invited to vote for three games they believe deserve to be at the top of this list; the first choice gets 3 points, the second choice gets 2 points and the third choice gets 1 point. These votes are then counted to create a top three list, with the overall winner taking home the top prize of the month.
