Nintendo has announced the closure of two of its mobile games in Belgium this summer. Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp and Fire Emblem Heroes will go offline August 27, after which players will not be able to download or play the titles in the country.
According to Nintendo, the decision to close the games is due to the position of the Belgian government on the boxes of surprises (via Games Industry). The Belgian Gaming Commission decided last year that gambling boxes were a game and recommended criminal prosecution of game developers who used such mechanisms in their titles.
Nintendo is the latest gaming company to have modified or withdrawn its games in Belgium following the decision of the BGC. Psyonix, developer of Valve, Blizzard and Rocket League, has eliminated the possibility of buying loot chests in the country, while Square Enix has closed three of its mobile games. Nintendo has announced that it will not publish any titles in the future using mechanisms similar to those of a box of loot in the country.
Like many other mobile games, Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp and Fire Emblem Heroes offer a form of premium currency in the game. In the first case, these come in the form of paper money, which can be exchanged against Fortune cookies containing a random item. The latter, meanwhile, has orbs, which can be exchanged to summon new heroes. Players in Belgium can continue to buy and exchange these currencies until the deadline.
Object boxes have recently been under scrutiny in a number of countries, including the United States. Senator Josh Hawley recently announced that he was introducing a bill banning booty boxes in games for minors. At the same time, New Zealand and France had recently opened their own investigations and decided that chests were not about playing.
