Nintendo has revealed some bad news for those who may be subscribed to the publisher’s Switch Online service. Specifically, it was recently confirmed that the price of the service will increase for those who want to access everything Nintendo Switch Online has to offer. And while the base version of the subscription platform won’t cost more, many of its best features will now be locked behind a bigger pay wall.
Nintendo recently announced that it will be adding playable games from the Nintendo 64 and Sega Genesis consoles to Nintendo Switch Online for subscribers to play on their own device. These titles join existing NES and Super Nintendo games that are available right now to play through Nintendo Switch Online. And if you’re wondering how that amounts to all that could be considered bad news, Nintendo has revealed that these N64 and Genesis games will only be accessible if you pay for a higher tier version of the subscription service. As such, if you are someone who wants to access these titles, you will need to be prepared to shell out some extra cash.

The biggest question that continues to surround this potential price increase for Nintendo Switch Online, however, concerns the actual new cost. As mentioned by Nintendo in the tweet above, the finer details surrounding the price and release of this new version of the service have yet to be determined. For now, the only thing we are certain of is that it should be available at some point in late October, when the Nintendo 64 and Sega Genesis games officially arrive on Switch Online.
If there is a silver lining to this whole situation, it is sure that those who are already happy with their current Nintendo Switch Online membership will not be asked to pay more than they are currently. Rather than increasing the cost of Switch Online as a whole, at least Nintendo is now making it available at different levels. Still, considering how little the service is already offering to subscribers, it would have been nice to see both N64 and Genesis titles available on the platform at the current price point.
