Nintendo is supposed to hold a “management briefing session” in Tokyo next month, just three days after Mario’s 35th birthday.
The news comes from David Gibson of Astris Advisory Japan, who reveals that Nintendo has shared details of the upcoming meeting with concerned industry people in Japan. According to Gibson, Nintendo said “no new products, services, etc.” will be discussed during the session.
Unlike regular briefings on the company’s financial results, this session is unusual in that it appears to be ad hoc. As VGC noted, it is quite possible that this is linked to some form of internal restructuring or company-centric development.
However, the date of September 16 at sparked renewed interest in a possible Mario birthday announcement. Earlier this year, it was reported that Nintendo is set to remaster “most of the 35th anniversary of the Super Mario catalog” to celebrate the occasion. With the Mario special date falling right before this reunion, some are starting to believe that the remasters – or maybe some other Mario-related product – could to be revealed at this time.
It would certainly make sense, even if it is purely speculation at this point. The announcement of Pikmin 3 Deluxe came just a day before Nintendo released its Q1 earnings report, which allows the company to include the game in the report itself, making its future timeline slightly more attractive to investors. Maybe we could see a similar deal here, with a big reveal of Mario landing just in time for Nintendo’s special reunion?
We’ll be keeping a close eye on this story as we approach the briefing and make sure to update you if there are any issues. Until then, and as always, let’s check our hopes and expectations!
