Nintendo has announced the next SNES and NES games coming to its Switch Online service. Depending on your perspective, the selection either shines a light on some underrated gems or demonstrates that you probably shouldn’t expect other big name third-party titles to appear in the library. Maybe both.
Here is the list of games:
- Psycho Dream (1992, SNES, Telenet Japan)
- Warrior of the end of the world (1992, SNES, Laser Soft)
- Prehistoric man (1995, SNES, Titus France)
- Fire and ice (1992, NES, Tecmo)
Not really big hitters, then: three pretty obscure SNES side-scrollers and an NES puzzle game. Fire and ice might be the most recognizable title for many, and only then if you know it’s the North American name of Key of Solomon 2.
Psycho Dream is a pretty neat addition. It’s a visually impressive action game that was originally intended to be released in the United States as a Dream probe, but for whatever reason, the plans fell through and it remained exclusive to Japan. And check out this synopsis:
When Sayaka doesn’t come back to reality after entering an immersive virtual world known as D-Movie, the protagonists, Ryo and Maria, must progress in a terrifying fantasy game called Legend of the fallen capital to save her and bring her back to reality.
Nintendo has been adding deep cuts to Switch Online for some time now, but the last three rounds of additions have at least included every game in the game. Donkey Kong Country crowd-pleasing trilogy. Personally, I like to check out titles that appear unexpectedly, but it seems clear that Nintendo is running out of games it owns the rights to or can convince other publishers to include.
Maybe now is a good time to start wondering when other platforms might be coming to Nintendo Switch Online. Perhaps the delisting of Super Mario 3D All-Stars next month could usher in Nintendo 64 games at some point. In the meantime, you can check out the latest additions on February 17 if you have a Switch Online subscription for $ 19.99 per year.
