China is the largest electric vehicle market in the world. In 2018, it accounted for 56% of global sales of electric vehicles, with 1.2 million units sold.
In an effort to capture a larger percentage of this market, Tesla is building a plant in Shanghai, the first to be wholly owned by a foreign auto company. For now, Tesla sends vehicles to Chinese customers in the United States.

Tesla's main domestic competitor in the Chinese luxury electric vehicle market is Nio, which has marketed its first vehicle, the ES8 SUV, in 2018. The ES8 offers a range of 355 miles, up to seven seats and one starting price of about $ 67,000.
Although it was first launched in 2015, the Tesla Model X SUV is the closest competitor to the company at ES8.
