Legend of the mediaNipsey Hussle: Thousands of people remember a rapper in Los Angeles

One person was killed during a procession to the memory of rapper Nipsey Hussle, along with three other wounded.

Shots were fired as the crowd passed through Los Angeles in commemoration of the 33-year-old man who was killed in LA last month.

"We need to stop this senseless violence," said LAPD police chief Michael Moore.

Thousands of fans came to celebrate the life of the Grammy-nominated musician, with Barack Obama among the authors of tribute letters.

The suspects fired on a gray Hyundai while the four victims paid tribute to the musician, according to the police.

The victims are described as three black men and a black woman aged 30 to 50 years.

Jay Z, with whom Nipsey worked with his Roc Nation label, attended the commemorative ceremony at Staples Center with Beyonce.

Snoop Dogg, Meek Mill and Diddy were also present to pay tribute.

A letter from former President Barack Obama, addressed to friends and family of Nipsey, was read during the service.

He congratulated Nipsey for her community work.

"His choice to invest in this community rather than ignore it – to build a vocational training center and a shared workspace in Crenshaw; to lift the American Eritrean community; to show the community; example to young people – is a legacy worth celebrating, "he wrote.

West Coast colleague and rapper Kendrick Lamar, Kendrick Lamar, also wrote a moving letter calling him a "real king".

"His charisma and style with words were powerful," he wrote. "But his integrity as a person has made me even more enthusiastic."

Nipsey's girlfriend, Lauren London, was joined by the couple's son, Kross, and her eldest son, Kameron, whose father is Lil Wayne.

"I would like to say something to my city, Los Angeles." This pain is ours – we know what Nip meant to us.

"We lost an incredible soul and a very rare person.

"We lost a real one."
