New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy will announce the statewide temporary suspension from high school and indoor youth sports on Monday under new rules to curb the spread of COVID-19, according to a report.
The suspension is expected to begin at 6 a.m. on Friday and last until at least January 2, NJ Advance Media reported, citing two sources with direct knowledge of the decision. Basketball, ice hockey and swimming at youth and high school are among the sports that will be affected.

College and professional indoor sports are not affected, the sources told the newspaper.
The new rules will also limit outdoor gatherings to a maximum of 25 people, the sources say, down from the 150-person limit put in place earlier this month before Thanksgiving.
But the virus has increased in New Jersey in recent weeks, with the state health department reporting 3,851 new cases of the coronavirus on Monday. A seven-day average of 4,018 cases per day over the past week was a 14% increase from two weeks earlier, according to the New York Times.
Murphy, a Democrat, told Fox News on Sunday that although he does not plan to shut down again, another statewide shutdown was still “on the table.”
“In terms of shutting down, I’m not anticipating it, and I certainly don’t want to go that route,” Murphy said on “Fox News Sunday”. “I would just like to implore people, especially during the holiday season, … keep your guard.”

“For the next two to three months, we’re in the fight of our lives.… There’s a lot of private transmission,” Murphy said.
