New Jersey teacher with injured ankle heroically ran into a moving unmanned SUV – stopping him just before he hit a group of students, amazing new videos show.
Surveillance footage from Wednesday – the first day of school – shows a father jumping out of his white SUV to give his daughter an iPad she left at Soehl College in Linden, NJ.com reported.
After escaping, the unattended SUV began driving directly towards more than a dozen children waiting outside the building, the video shows.
As the father backed up to try and stop his vehicle from the front, physical education teacher Valerie Tauriello ran to jump in and stop him – even though she had a support boot on her left leg .
“It was a situation where a lot of people could have been injured,” Tauriello told NJ.com.
“Without hesitation, I just had to take action and stop this moving car from getting into school or hurting the kids,” she said.
“It was very difficult to jump in a moving car. I never realized it would be a difficult task, ”she told the local outlet.
She said that due to her ankle injury she first tried to call the owner of the car – but quickly realized that she “understood that I am the only one who can access the car. this car “.
“I know I can’t run that fast so at first I was a little bit frozen,” she said.
“But I was like, oh my god I have to stop this car or it’s gonna hurt someone.”
The principal, Gwendolyn Long, congratulated the teacher, saying that she “did not hesitate to risk her life to save our students”.
“She’s the person she is,” Long told NJ.com. “The Soehl Middle School family are just blessed to have her.”
