The National Weather Service has issued a flurry of tornado warnings for several counties in New Jersey due to severe thunderstorms moving through the area from the remnants of Tropical Storm Ida.
A tornado has already been spotted on the ground in Gloucester County, according to the Weather Service, and forecasters have seen indications of rotating clouds on radar but have yet to confirm other tornadoes land in the New Jersey at 7:30 p.m.
However, several funnel clouds have been captured on video and circulating on social media, and they appear to be in locations subject to tornado warnings.
UPDATE (7:30 p.m.): A tornado warning has been issued for Mercer, Middlesex, Morris and Somerset counties, in effect until 8:15 p.m. Wednesday. “A severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado was located over Lawrenceville, or near Trenton, moving northeast at 40 mph,” the warning reads.
UPDATE (7:20 p.m.): A tornado warning has been issued for south-central Hunterdon County and west-central Mercer County, in effect until 7:45 p.m. was moving northeast at 25 mph.

The National Weather Service said a 911 call center had received a report of “extensive damage in the Mullica Hill area, including several damaged homes and downed trees on Cedar Road.”
The Weather Service also received a report of a funnel cloud and damage in the Borough of Wenonah in Gloucester County at 6:27 p.m., but it was not immediately clear if this was related to the tornado that took been spotted in Woodbury Heights.
UPDATE (6:45 p.m.): A tornado warning has been issued for northwest Camden County and northwest Burlington County, in effect until 7:15 p.m. Wednesday.
“A severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado was located over the Golden Triangle, or near Camden, moving northeast at 40 mph,” the warning reads. “This storm used to produce a strong tornado in Gloucester County.”
In addition to the flurry of tornado warnings issued Wednesday night, the National Weather Service has expanded its tornado surveillance to include Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Passaic and Union counties, as well as New York and Long Island, NY
Tornado watch – not as urgent as a warning – is active until 1 a.m. Thursday.
The National Weather Service also said an “extremely dangerous tornado” had been spotted northwest of Philadelphia.

An earlier tornado warning was issued in Cumberland and Salem counties, but it expired at 6 p.m., and a tornado warning in Mercer County also expired at 6 p.m.
Severe thunderstorms began to cross southern Jersey on Wednesday morning, and some moved into Monmouth and Ocean counties around 9 a.m.
Forecasters say another wave of thunderstorms will sweep through New Jersey later Wednesday afternoon and Wednesday evening, with the greatest threat of tornadoes in the southern half of the state.
Most of southern Jersey has been at increased risk of severe thunderstorms throughout the day on Wednesday, and forecasters say some of those storms could be volatile enough to trigger an isolated tornado.

The National Weather Service estimates the northern New Jersey region faces the greatest threat of torrential rain – possibly up to 4-6 inches – that could trigger flash floods on roads as well as widespread river flooding. and streams that overflow from their banks.
New Jersey typically experiences an average of two tornadoes each year, but has already had 10 confirmed tornadoes that hit in 2021.
The remnants of Tropical Storm Fred spawned a small tornado in Morris County in the early morning hours of August 19. Prior to that, six tornadoes landed on the same day in a rare tornado outbreak on July 29, and two tornadoes hit the New Jersey coast during Tropical Storm Elsa in early July.
