A man who drew a gun during Sunday’s State House dueling protests in Salem, Oregon was not arrested after complying with police.
The incident was captured in dramatic video, as Antifa protesters clashed with protesters participating in a “freedom rally”.
The white-haired man got out of his pickup truck decorated with the American flag to observe the damage allegedly caused by the Antifa protesters. It was then that he was attacked with pepper spray, by a crowd surrounding him, police said.
He dropped his gun on police orders, the video showed.
“After being assaulted with pepper spray, the person drew a handgun from his belt in self-defense,” Oregon state police said in a statement.
“He didn’t point the gun at anyone and dropped it when law enforcement ordered him to do so. This person has a valid Concealed Handgun license. This person was detained, interrogated and then released. “
Four men were arrested during the demonstration and the counter-demonstration. Two have been charged with disorderly conduct, one has been charged with interfering with an officer and another is charged with illegally aiming a laser, police said.
More than 100 left-wing protesters – many linked to the Youth Liberation Front – have come forward to “prevent the Freedom Rally caravan” which was planning to meet on Capitol Hill, police said.
Some members of the crowd were accused of damaging vehicles, including those of the gunman.
