No danger in a grenade found in the courtyard of rue E. Cabarrus :: WRAL.com

– An investigation has determined that a hand grenade found at a Raleigh construction site on Sunday poses no danger.

A spokesperson for Raleigh Police said the grenade was real, but had a hole drilled in the bottom with no gunpowder inside. He added that the pomegranate is sold in surplus stores as a novelty item.

Officials said the grenade was badly rusted because it had been underground for a long time.

Residents of block 600 on East Cabarrus Street endured a few hours of tension – three homes were briefly evacuated – after a person doing yard work found the grenade and called the police.

Three members of the Raleigh Police Department bomb squad removed the grenade and determined it was not a threat.

The pomegranate’s origin, age, or time in the yard were not immediately clear.
