SCOTTSDALE, Arizona – Two of college football’s most important bowling games will not get fans to attend early next year.
The Rose Bowl, one of college football’s playoff semifinal games, and the Fiesta Bowl made their announcements on Thursday.
The Tournament of Roses said it has requested special permission for a limited number of fans or a number of guests from both teams to be in attendance for the Rose Bowl, which will be played on New Years Day in Pasadena, in California, but was denied due to COVID-19 restrictions imposed by the state, county and city of Pasadena.
“While we are disappointed that the Rose Bowl Game is not played in front of the spectators, we are happy to be able to host the game again this year, continuing the more than 100 year tradition of The Granddaddy of Them All,” said David Eads, Executive Director and CEO of the Tournament of Roses. “We continue to work closely with officials from the Department of Health and Rose Bowl Stadium to provide the safest environment possible for our participants.”
The Fiesta Bowl, which will be played Jan. 2 at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Ariz., Will not allow fans, but will allow families of playing teams to attend.
In a statement, the Fiesta Bowl said the decision not to allow fans to participate in the game was made by “local courts,” which based its judgment on recommendations from the Arizona Department of Health Services ( ADHS) in an effort to slow the spread of COVID. -19.
“While we are disappointed that the PlayStation Fiesta Bowl does not have fans in the stadium to enjoy Bowl Season this year, we respect the decisions made by local authorities,” said Mike Nealy, Executive Director of the Fiesta Bowl organization. “Our staff have been extremely diligent in putting in place health and safety measures that have garnered the Governor’s Office approval for policies aligned with recommendations to reduce the risk of COVID-19 transmission. Ultimately, we must all do our part to ensure the health and safety of our community to reduce the spread of COVID-19. “
The state of Arizona has seen an increase in confirmed cases of COVID-19 over the past month, peaking on Nov. 23 with 5,724, according to ADHS. Arizona had fallen to less than 600 in one day in mid-September.
Los Angeles County is under a stay-at-home order that took effect this week and ends in mid-December. Pasadena has its own public health department and can set its own rules, but has mainly followed the county’s lead during the coronavirus pandemic.
The Sugar Bowl, the CFP’s other semi-final, Orange Bowl and College Football Playoff Championship Game, which will be played at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, still plans to have fans in a limited capacity, according to their respective websites.
There are three boules played in Arizona. The Arizona Bowl, which is played on New Years Eve in Tucson, announced in October that it will have no fans. A decision has yet to be announced regarding the Guaranteed Rate Bowl, which will be played on December 26 at Chase Field in downtown Phoenix.
So far, 10 bowling matches have been canceled due to the pandemic.
