Current Google Pixel phones will be the last to offer free and unlimited “high quality” downloads on Google Photos. While the company said yesterday that previous Pixel phones can still download these photos for free after Google’s unlimited storage focused on June 1, 2021, Google has confirmed to us that future pixels you purchase will not come with these free downloads. .
This isn’t the first time that Google has reduced the Pixel Advantage. Originally, one of the Pixel’s selling points was free original-quality photo storage without the compression Google Photos applies to most downloads to provide free storage to get started. But in June, users will either have to 1) start paying for Google One storage plans after hitting the company’s 15GB limit for free accounts, or 2) take their photos elsewhere.
While Google grants grandfathering rights to any photos you took before June 1, 2021 so that they don’t apply to that 15GB limit, that doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll have an additional amount of 15 GB of photos arrive on June 1 – because Google also counts your Gmail and Google Drive to this number.
Take me, for example:
If I don’t delete a lot of emails, I’m going to run out pretty quickly after June 1st.
