Investigators have “no idea” why a man in Maryland gunned down his parents at their home and gunned down two other people at a convenience store before setting his apartment on fire and killing himself, a police official said on Monday. .
A gun that Joshua Green, 27, used in Sunday’s murderous shooting was registered to him and had been legally purchased in 2020, according to Baltimore County Police Col. Andre Davis.
“As to why this happened, we have no idea yet,” Davis said at a press conference. “Our homicide detectives are relentlessly investigating a motive, but it seems the shooter acted alone.”
Police believe Green killed his parents – Douglas Green, 59, and Olivia Green, 63 – at their Baltimore County home before heading to a Royal Farms store in Essex just before 7 a.m. on Sunday.
Green got stuck in another car in the store parking lot, got out and killed Alpha Elizabeth, 63, while she was sitting in her vehicle, according to Davis. Green then entered the store and shot and killed a customer, Silvester Day Jr., 44, near a cash register before injuring a store worker. Davis said the employee, a male, was in stable condition in a hospital on Monday.
After the shooting, police said, Green returned home and set his apartment on fire before shooting himself. Police found the apartment on fire and Green dead in the parking lot with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Homicide detectives found the bodies of Green’s parents in their garage when they went to their home to inform them of their son’s death, according to Davis.
Davis said Green had “no criminal contact with the police” before the shooting.
Police Chief Melissa Hyatt said there were “more questions than answers” about a “horrible and sickening event that changed the lives of many people”.
“So far, we know that four innocent people have lost their lives and one person has been seriously injured,” she said.
Hyatt said police spoke to a relative in Green, but did not elaborate.
“When we are able to have definite facts and information, we will relay them. We just want to make sure that we are disseminating accurate information, ”the chief said.
Green’s parents lived in an unincorporated part of Baltimore County called Baldwin. Daniel Brennaman, 73, a neighbor who lives two doors down from the couple’s house, said he noticed a police car and saw a photographer outside the house walking his dog on Sunday evening.
“A storm blew in here, and I thought it was a car crash around the corner,” he said. “I did not hear anything.”
Brennaman said he exchanged greetings and talks with the couple, but did not know them personally.
“I wave to him from time to time. He still works in his yard, ”he said.
Royal Farms spokeswoman Breahna Brown said on Sunday the company had no immediate comment on the shooting at its store.
