At what point do we start to contextualize a game’s age with “do you want to feel old?” “If it’s five, what about you? Because No Man’s Sky launched five years ago today. The space exploration simulation celebrated its anniversary with a look back at all of its past major updates and expansions, as well as a little glimpse into the future. If for some reason you thought Hello Games had made major updates to its procedural universe, you were wrong. The next update is called Frontiers and is coming soon.
You can see the No Man’s Sky birthday trailer here, a little victory ride to celebrate all of the progress the game has made since its launch. It ends with the smaller teaser that the Frontiers update will be coming “soon”.
“As we move forward into 2021, our next Frontiers update is something that excites me,” studio founder Sean Murray said in an anniversary post on the PlayStation Blog. “In some ways this is just another update, but in other ways it’s a missing piece of the sci-fi fantasy that we’ve always wanted to add, and very fitting for our fifth anniversary. . There are still a lot of things we want to try, we are still so excited. The next stop on this journey is not far away. We will have more to share on Frontiers with travelers very soon. ”
That’s all we currently know about Frontiers. That and the logo, which includes two crescent moons inside the Frontiers name. If it’s a clue, it’s too subtle for me. Maybe you have a lot of theories though.
No Man’s Sky had so many updates that I honestly lost count. Borders will be on the 17th, according to Hello Games, after the initial base building update, surface vehicles, robots, tame creatures, rideable creatures, and more. It really is an impressive list for five years of post-launch updates.
Last September, Sean Murray said that Hello Games is currently split between ongoing updates to No Man’s Sky and their next huge and ambitious game. We will hear more on both in due course.
