Mask, mask.
The 2021 Emmy Awards were full of colorful ensembles, soulful speeches, and coveted gold statuettes – but no masks in sight.
While the 2020 coronavirus had much reduced price discounts, the party only got bigger this year. Many viewers and fans on social media, Twitter and beyond certainly had something to say about the celebrities sitting close to each other during the broadcast.
Because as recent outbreaks show, COVID-19 is still a thing.
Emmy host Cedric the Entertainer even joked about the virus in his opening monologue. “We had to vaxx to come here,” he said, noting the show’s precautions. “I got vaxxed. I had no reaction like the friend of Nicki Minaj’s cousin. I have Pfizer because I am a candle. Pfizer is the Neiman Marcus of vaccines, Moderna is Macy’s. Johnson & Johnson is TJ Maxx.
Seth Rogen, the evening’s first presenter, also joked about the pandemic. “I went from wiping my groceries to Paul Bettany to sneezing in his face,” Rogen said.
Follow the reactions on Twitter. “Me: why are the emmys in such a small room with no masks and no ventilation during a pandemic (30 seconds later) seth rogen: why are we in such a small room with no masks and no ventilation during a pandemic”, Mon confused fan wrote.
“No distancing, no masks. Clearly a slap in the face for all the police workers who are still grappling with the pandemic. Check your privilege @ TheEmmys # Emmys ”, another noted.
A rang, “No #Emmys masks because the rules are for little people.”
Another blatantly added, “It sucks that there are no face masks at the Emmys. Missed opportunity and you can also catch COVID and die.”
“Helping the no masks at Emmys makes me nervous, there are so many people,” one user wrote.
A the spectator said, “No masks are worn INSIDE the Emmys. Don’t call me shocked, love to preach but don’t practice what they preach…”
The Emmys weren’t the only big Hollywood event that bowled fans over the rules of the pandemic. The Met Gala earlier this month also sent viewers into a frenzy. Nicki Minaj even chose not to attend the gala because guests had to show proof of vaccination.
