Microsoft announced plans to buy Bethesda parent company ZeniMax last September. Currently, they are still in the process of obtaining permission to take ZeniMax’s hand in the corporate marriage from all necessary legal and legislative bodies. As part of this process, Microsoft apparently plans to create a new company called “Vault” with which ZeniMax will be merged. But unlike the original reports (ours included), the pretty name is only temporary.
The name appears in a notification to the European Commission, which Microsoft has requested permission to make its planned $ 7.5 billion purchase of ZeniMax and its subsidiaries, including Bethesda Game Studios, iD Software, Arkane and other.
“The merger is effected by means of a merger whereby a newly created Microsoft subsidiary (‘Vault’) will be merged with and into ZeniMax,” read the relevant part of the notice.
However, in the midst of today’s hubbub, the people of the UESP highlighted that another January filing makes it clear that the name will not stick. “As a result of this merger, Vault will cease to exist and ZeniMax will survive, as a wholly-owned subsidiary of Microsoft,” he says. So Vault will be vaulted, lost like so many vault dwellers trapped in strange experiences.
Shortly after the initial purchase announcement, Microsoft confirmed its intention to honor the scheduled PS5 exclusivity for Deathloop and GhostWire: Tokyo. They also said they wanted to buy more studios, which made them one of the giant companies that were gobbling up game studios and would further consolidate the games industry.
