Firefox for Android regularly receives major updates to its features in recent months, the latest being the 66.0 release, which introduces a new feature preventing websites from automatically playing audio, among other things. After this summer, the mobile web browser will not receive any new updates as part of Mozilla's efforts to transfer its development resources to a new Firefox replacement on Android, called Fenix.
Mozilla seems to be seriously working on the new web browser for Android devices. On September 3rd, Legacy Firefox will become obsolete when its version 68.1 enters the Extended Support Release (ESR) channel. This means that Firefox for Android will only receive security or stability patches without subsequent updates.
Until then, the timeline for the legacy browser's major updates will continue as expected, with the main features set for May 14 (version 67.0) and July 9 (version 68.0), respectively. It may be interesting to note that the July 9 release will mark the final update of the Firefox feature on Android.
The depreciation of Firefox on Android should continue over the next few months until Fenix is ready for practical use. However, it is not yet known when Mozilla plans to publish Fenix to the public.
