No charges are expected after the death of a 16-year-old Scout while he was hiking in the Arizona desert, authorities said Friday.
Investigators investigating the death at Picacho Peak State Park last Saturday do not expect a criminal complaint, said Pinal County Sheriff spokeswoman Navideh Forghani.
She said that there were two adults who were leading a small group of Scouts during a trek in the South Arizona Park, which featured a distinctive 1500-foot Picacho peak (457 meters).
The sheriff's officials said the hikers had water when they left, but ran up the trail. The boy showed signs of extreme dehydration and died downhill. It was still unclear whether the lack of water had resulted in the death of the boy or he had another medical problem.
Hikers called 911, but the boy was already unconscious when a ranger arrived. Paramedics have also assessed the depletion of both adults and a child, but they do not need to be taken to the hospital, officials said.
The authorities have not disclosed the name of the teenager, but an online obituary indicates that he was a member of the junior high school team Estrella Foothills in Goodyear, a suburb west of Phoenix. A memorial service was scheduled for May 10th.
