Yahoo Life SEA had a little chat with Lea about the importance of her revolutionary role and what it means for women in the Bond films. The 36-year-old French actress told us how great it is that the female characters in the 007 films are portrayed as “real women” and not just subjects of the male gaze, and what Bond and Swann treat as a couple. in NTTD.

Dr Madeleine Swann is the only Bond girl to have obtained a second film. What makes her so special?

It’s the first time we’ve seen a woman in a Bond film who looks like a real woman – a real woman you can relate to. She has depth and vulnerability, which is very new for a female character in James Bond, as they were a bit objectified and perhaps idealized. This time it is not seen from a man’s point of view. We got rid of the male gaze. She’s become just as interesting as the other protagonists in the movie, and I hope people connect with her emotionally.

No Time To Die has a second female lead character – new agent 007, Nomi, played by Lashana Lynch. How do you feel about having two strong female characters in one Bond movie?

It’s good! They’re not sexualized, you know, or objectified. Lashana could have been a man in history. And it’s a woman and that doesn’t really change. It doesn’t really matter that she’s a woman. I think it is important. He’s an interesting character. It doesn’t matter if it’s female or male, it’s just an agent and a strong character. She has a very strong personality and she is very charismatic. Lashana and my character are very different. He’s an 007 agent, but he’s also a character with consistency. You have access to her emotions, and she’s not just the pretty girl in the swimsuit.

Can you tell us what Bond and Swann are dealing with with each other in No Time To Die?

They’re going to go through a lot. They won’t have an easy trip together. It won’t be very simple, because she will reveal a secret to James Bond, and that will complicate things, but they also understand each other, because they shared the same childhood, in a way. They are both damaged and they don’t really trust people. And when they meet, there will be sparks.
