Noah Syndergaard is back in rehab.
The Mets right-hander will pitch a round for High-A Brooklyn on Thursday, his first outing since his first rehab mission after Tommy John surgery was cut short in May due to elbow discomfort.
Syndergaard is expected to return to the Mets as a reliever to speed up his availability, although it is not known how many rehab appearances he will need before being deemed ready. Acting general manager Zack Scott said on Tuesday the Mets could use Syndergaard as a multi-innings threat in September, hoping he can contribute to a playoff push.
A pending free agent, Syndergaard last launched for the Mets in September 2019. He underwent Tommy John surgery in March 2020 and stepped out for his first rehab mission in May. But it ended after just two starts with Low-A St. Lucie.
After a stop, Syndergaard began to rebuild and hosted a pair of live enclosure sessions on the recent Mets road trip. He then kicked off a lightweight side session on Tuesday at Citi Field to prepare for Thursday’s outing.
A day after coming back from the injured list for a tense oblique and skipping a rehab mission, Francisco Lindor was out of the starting lineup for Wednesday’s 3-2 loss to the Giants. Manager Luis Rojas said ahead of Tuesday’s game, in which Lindor went 0-for-4, that the Mets would relieve him and take him day to day.
Rojas said on Wednesday Lindor “was feeling good” but was “a little tired” after playing nine innings for the first time since July 11. with runners in the first and second with an out in the ninth inning.
“I’m sure he probably could have gone today,” Rojas said ahead of the game. “[But] the performance [staff] felt it was smart to give her that day off.
Lindor could be out of the roster again later this week depending on how he feels, Rojas suggested, before the Mets let go of the shortstop.
Receiver Tomas Nido (sprained left thumb) could drop off the injured list by Friday, Rojas said. He is more advanced in his progression than James McCann (lower back spasms), who still has tightness in his back but begins to make “rotational movements”.
Meanwhile, Patrick Mazeika started behind plate Wednesday for the seventh time in the last eight games, with Chance Sisco as a substitute.
Taijuan Walker went 2 for 2 with the two hits coming from the left side – his first two hits with a southpaw this season. The natural right-handed hitter changed earlier in the season due to injury issues. … Pete Alonso extended his career-high 10-game batting streak with a first inning single.
