The new pilots Lyft and Uber are unlucky in New York.
Both mobile phone applications stopped recruiting new drivers last month. The Uber suspension came into effect on April 1 and the wait list of Lyft drivers followed. Politico noticed the retention of new drivers in an article published Monday, nearly a month after Uber stopped accepting new drivers.
Lyft has confirmed that New York City is the only place where Lyft operates with a waiting list. Uber said New York is the only US city with a driver. Uber suggests interested drivers to deliver for Uber Eats or drive outside the city.
The two websites for New York drivers post information on the suspension of new drivers in plain sight:
The Uber website says it can not accept new drivers "in part because of the new TLC regulations". A spokesman for Uber said the waiting list should eventually be opened.
"As the pilots leave the sector and motorcycle demand increases, we will look again to add new drivers."
Lyft also cited wage regulation based on utilization rates.
"Due to the TLC regulations, we do not accept new drivers in New York.We have a waiting list and we will let drivers know when they can apply for a ride."
Lyft said that it had continued its integration even after Uber closed down new drivers on April 1, but that Uber had been able to increase its utilization rate and pay the drivers less, Lyft quickly had to stop new drivers to stay competitive.
The New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission (TLC) has put in place a viable wage regulation for carpooling drivers in February, following its approval last year. Independent contractor drivers must earn at least $ 17.22 the hour after expenses. The amount companies like Uber have to pay is based on utilization rates as part of an effort to eliminate traffic jams on the streets and ensure that rental cars are well-stocked and that traffic not be saturated. Last year, a year on the new Uber and Lyft vehicles also entered into force.
A spokesman for TLC said that new drivers of cabs, black cars and limos could still apply for a license. "The limit for driver registration was a decision made solely by Uber and Lyft. TLC is still accepting new TLC driver's license applications, "she said.
Other driving options on the on-the-go driving applications are still available, as with the Via sharing app. A spokesman said that he "was continuing to develop its base of conductive partners in New York." Her shared carpool model allows Via to easily achieve high utilization rates, she said.
Surprisingly, it took weeks to see what was happening in New York.
