We’re in the midst of a resurgence of Android tablets – no, seriously – and after recent devices from Samsung, Walmart, Xiaomi, and Lenovo, HMD is next with its very first tablet, the Nokia T20. Nokia is tackling the low end of the market by launching a $ 249.99 tablet with a 10.4-inch screen.
Let’s talk about the specifications. The SoC is a Unisoc Tiger T610 (a Unisoc SoC is a rare making up); It is a 12nm chip with two 1.8GHz A75 cores and six 1.8GHz A55 cores. The major A75 cores are quite old and were last seen in major flagships with the Snapdragon 845 in 2017, so this is an entry-level chip. There’s 4GB of RAM, 512GB of storage, and a sizable 8,200mAh battery. The screen is a 10.4 inch LCD display with a resolution of 2000 × 1200 and a “tempered glass” cover (read: not the usual Gorilla Glass). The back is aluminum, and there’s a microSD slot, stereo speakers, a front and rear camera, a USB-C port with 15W charging, and a headphone jack. There is no fingerprint sensor.
$ 249.99 gets you the Wi-Fi only model, but a priceless LTE version is also listed on the spec page. Nokia sells a kickstand case for an unknown amount. The device ships with Android 11 and comes with two years of major operating system updates and three years of security updates.
An interesting design decision involves the Nokia T20’s headphone jack, which is … uh, mounted in the corner? The lower right corner houses the headphone jack at what looks like a 45-degree angle. Is this going to work? People sometimes hold their shelves by the bottom corners, so won’t that get in the way? I guess you could hold the tablet upside down, but then you will be holding the device in front of the camera lens. Hopefully HMD made sure most headphone jacks don’t touch the table when using a kickstand case.
Either way, it’s great to see Android tablets making a comeback, especially with foldables pushing the form factor forward on phones and Google’s renewed interest in tablets with Android. 12.1 and Entertainment Space. Now we just need more apps on the big screen. Please, developers?
