After MrMobile announced that he would be revisiting some legendary phones from the past again, Juho Sarvikas reached out to him and shared some of the ideas from Nokia Mobile when he learned that the unique Nokia N95 was going to be the star of the video. YT from MrMobile. What he shared were concept drawings for a smartphone that would have a sliding mechanism to reveal the speakers and a selfie camera behind the screen. He also sent a non-working prototype to MrMobile to show that Nokia Mobile actually develops a lot of concepts when researching a final product. After the video was released, Juho also shared a render of the Nokia 6.3 prototype with a sliding display mechanism. They were exploring different sliding directions like an upper, lower, side or even angular slide of the screen, but that idea could have been put back in the drawer.
Well, it seems like the whole idea of having a sliding mechanism is to reveal something that’s hiding behind the screen, and that can only be speakers, a camera, and an LED flash, and maybe- be additional physical buttons. Having speakers hidden behind the screen would probably be pointless as you couldn’t use their full potential if the screen covered them. The user would have to slide the screen and uncover them for each little video or just keep the device always open, which decreases the usability. In fact, there are some good solutions for the stereo speakers currently in use, so this approach can be done instead of putting it behind the screen.
The only good reason to have a sliding mechanism is to hide the selfie camera, which Xiaomi did well with Mi Mix 3. This phone looked great, made full use of the screen, but the camera would still be full of dust, you will therefore have to clean it more often.
The other reason for having a sliding mechanism would be to hide a full qwerty keyboard, which Nokia has done well with Nokia E7, Nokia N900 or Nokia N950. A full physical qwerty keyboard is something that might interest some, but having a big screen on top that can have a virtual qwerty keyboard is useless, except that you are a quick keyboard, machete, finger.
Somehow, I don’t think we’ll see a full physical qwerty keyboard on Nokia phones, or Dolby speakers behind the screen, but it would be nice to have a sliding mechanism from the top. at the bottom to reveal a stunning selfie camera with Zeiss lenses. There could also be space for physical or virtual control buttons on the other side, which could still remind us of N95 and give us additional user-friendliness of the device. LG has played around with that extra LCD screen, so there might be room for at least one e-ink screen for additional controls, like Asus ZenBook on the touchpad.
I am happy that Nokia mobile is experimenting with new designs and that there might be a Nokia phone with a completely free display, with just a slight notch on the side that will have a Nokia logo like in Nokia N900.
