Nomadland is one of the best movies of 2020 that hardly anyone has seen. But that will change soon, as distributor Searchlight Pictures has set a Nomadland released in both theaters and streaming next month, just before the Oscars.
Searchlight Pictures may have waited too long to release Nomadland at theaters, but at least they’re rolling out the red carpet for Chloe ZhaoThe acclaimed road drama. Variety reports that Nomadland is expected to debut in select IMAX theaters on January 29, 2021, before opening in traditional theaters and drive-ins on February 19, 2021. And on the same day it hits theaters in February, Nomadland will premiere on Hulu.
IMAX seems like an odd choice for an intimate character drama like Nomadland, because the format is generally reserved for large blockbusters. But the film’s panoramic shots of the American countryside, in all its raw, unspoiled splendor, are certainly worth seeing on the biggest screen possible.
The road to the big screen has been marked by delays Nomadland, which has taken the film festival circuit by storm, winning top awards at the Venice Film Festival and Toronto Film Festival, with Searchlight initially planning a theatrical release in December 2020. It got an exclusive virtual screening of a week at Lincoln Center in New York that months but was otherwise hidden from the public – even as it landed on many critics’ best of the year lists, including / Film and Your Real’s .
Based on the 2017 non-fiction book Nomadland: surviving America in the 21st century by Jessica Bruder, the movie stars Frances mcdormand like Fern, a woman who wraps her life after the Great Recession causes the economic collapse of her corporate town in rural Nevada, and hits the road, joining a community of nomads roaming the country. David Strathairn co-stars in Nomadland with real nomads Linda May, Charlene Swankie and Bob Wells. Zhao’s massive movie, following on from his latest critical darling The Cavalier as of 2017, is a shoo-in in this year’s Oscar race – which makes its late release a bit curious (although the pandemic has spoiled any sense of timing or deadlines). But maybe like last year 1917 he’ll become a late-entry dark horse that will eventually become the unlikely favorite for Best Picture. I hope so, because this film of a painful and tender beauty deserves to be hailed as the best of the year.
In addition to the US release in February, Searchlight also plans to create Nomadland internationally throughout the spring, from March 4, 2021 (if the pandemic permits).
