SEATTLE (AP) – New rules for non-competition contracts have been passed by Governor Jay Inslee in Washington State, adding protections for workers – but with changes being pursued by online retailer Amazon .
Contracts, which prohibit a worker from joining a competitor after leaving a job, should be prohibited to workers earning less than $ 100,000 per year. They are allowed beyond this threshold, but with additional protections, including a time limit and an obligation to indemnify employees bound by the contracts after they are laid off.
Amazon's lobbying has played a key role in setting the income threshold in the bill: the company has asked for the salary to be lowered to $ 100,000, exempting many Seattle-area employees who earn a salary median of 113 000 USD about a company that follows the best companies.
Inslee signed the legislation on Wednesday.
