Job creations were pretty general.
Health care led with 49,000 new workers, professional and technical services added to 34,000, and food and beverage outlets contributed 27,000. Construction increased by 16,000 but manufacturing lost 6,000 jobs.
The numbers came a month after the staggering gain of only 20,000 in February, which was revised to 33,000 in the March report. The strong 311,000 increase in January also increased to 312,000, bringing the average gain in the last three months to 180,000. This remains strong, but lower than the average monthly gain of 233,000 in 2018.
Household survey data showed that there were 201,000 fewer people among the employed, which resulted in a contraction in the labor force of 224,000. The number of people considered as non-active increased by 369,000 to 95.6 million. The activity rate was 63%, down 0.2 points from its lowest level since November.
The total employment level fell to 156.7 million, while the number of unemployed also fell slightly to just over 6.2 million.
