Nordstrom, headquartered in Seattle, is closing its Northgate site later this summer.
The store will close its doors on August 9, reports the Seattle Times. Northgate Nordstrom has approximately 170 employees. The Nordstrom Rack of the mall will remain open.
The Times also notes that the retailer closes about two stores a year, which are considered underperforming. The company also announced a decline in profits in recent months. The newspaper says stores like Nordstrom are facing fierce competition in the online market and discount stores.
Addressing the homelessness crisis in Northgate
Nordstrom was founded in 1901 and is headquartered in Seattle.
The closure comes as the Northgate shopping center evolves. The property is facing a major shift with the NHL's plans for a training center for its new hockey team in Seattle. Alongside the change, new sales areas and housing units will be created.
MyNorthwest announced in February that the Northgate facility project included 400,000 square feet of sales space, 1 million square feet of office space, 953 residential units, 400 hotel rooms, approximately 7.5 acres open spaces and over 5,100 parking spaces. According to the Puget Sound Business Journal, a $ 140 million, 140-million-square-foot hockey center will also be built and funded by the NHL in Seattle.
The final goal of the 55-acre property will be a new shopping center and hockey center.
