North Carolina hospital system fires around 175 unvaccinated workers

Novant Health has laid off approximately 175 employees for failing to meet the company’s COVID-19 vaccine mandate.

The North Carolina-based company, which operates 15 hospitals, announced last week that it had suspended 375 workers who had not received the vaccine. As of Friday, 200 of these workers received their first dose, according to to Novant spokesperson Megan Rivers.

Although Novant confirmed that the remaining employees who refused to be vaccinated had been laid off, the company did not say how many it was. The company, which employs around 29,000 people, said it had a 99% compliance rate with its vaccine mandate.

This follows the layoff of employees at New York City hospitals as the state’s vaccination mandate for healthcare workers expired on Monday.

New York Presbyterian hospitals confirmed they released more than 200 employees this morning.

“So out of 48,000 employees and affiliated physicians, we have fewer than 220 who have not chosen to be vaccinated,” Steven Corwin, president and CEO of New York-Presbyterian Hospitals, told CBS News.

The exact number of healthcare workers who were laid off in New York City is not yet known, as many workers obtained the vaccine in the last few days before the deadline and some hospitals have temporarily placed non-workers on leave. compliant.
