Constable James Hampton offered his resignation after tSalisbury Police Department recommended his dismissal for his actions against K-9 Zuul, a press release from the department said.

“Officer Hampton has tendered his resignation with immediate effect,” the statement read. “The police department’s review determined that Constable Hampton acted in a manner that was totally inconsistent with his K-9 training and violated police department policy.”

Hampton went through a hearing where he had the opportunity to defend his actions, but decided to resign before he could be formally fired.

“While we understand the officer’s demands for immediate dismissal, city employees benefit from a due process that ensures fairness for all involved and which can be time-consuming,” the ministry said.

“The Salisbury Police Department will continue to review and make necessary changes to our K-9 training operations, policies and procedures which align with industry best practices.”
