North Carolina sheriff’s deputy gunned down after gunman’s gun unintentionally discharges, officials say

The deputy of a North Carolina sheriff was gunned down while responding to a domestic disturbance on Thanksgiving night after the wife of an armed suspect attempted to take a gun from her husband, have officials announced Friday.

Rockingham County Sheriff’s Deputies were investigating a Reidsville home where three children were at home shortly after 7 p.m. Thursday. Silva’s wife appeared to try to disarm him by grabbing the gun. As she did, the gun exploded, with Striker Assistant Tyler Wiseman in his leg, police said.

The other deputy at the scene, Tyler Wray, recovered the handgun safely and took Silva into custody.

Wiseman suffered serious but not life threatening injuries, police said.

“We have a tough job in law enforcement,” Rockingham County Sheriff Sam Page said. “It’s often dangerous. Yet courageous officers like MPs Wiseman and Wray answer the call every day, putting themselves [sic] in danger.

Police charged Silva with assault by pointing a gun at someone for an earlier unrelated incident. He does not face any charges in connection with the injuries to the deputy sheriff, officials said, with investigators determining that “the discharge of the gun was not an intentional act.”
