A bigger recovery: Twitter closed 70 million accounts

Twitter has suspended more than a million accounts each day in recent months, writes The Washington Post.

The company has already been criticized for not doing enough to prevent Twitter from being used to spread fake news, hate speech, links to malware and other unwanted content. Last year, for example, Russian gamers used fake Twitter accounts to influence the US presidential elections.

In May, Twitter released and announced that it has used new algorithms to detect suspicious behavior and prevent the spread of messages from web trolls.

According to the Washington Post, Twitter suspended more than 70 million accounts in May and June, continuing at the same pace in July.

The number of users can drop

The deletion of Twitter accounts means that the number of monthly users of the microprocessor service could drop in the second quarter. In total, the service now has 336 million active users.

A March 2017 report showed that between 9 and 15% of all accounts on Twitter were not controlled by humans but by butter. The boxes have a feature that allows them to look like, retrieve and track other Twitter accounts – and many of them spread prejudices and political propaganda.

Twitter, according to Washington Post, estimates that less than 5% of their active users are fake or involved in spam and that less than 8.5% use automated tools that allow you to characterize them as butter.
