Equinor received the consent of the Norwegian Petroleum Safety Authority to use the energy from landfills at Johan Sverdrup's field.

According to PSA, the company will acquire electricity from the grid and will be converted to DC power at a Haugsneset substation near Kårstø. From there there is a sea cable across the Boknafjord, across the Norwegians and into the North Sea to Johan Sverdrup. The power will be transformed into alternating current.

Production in the field currently under construction is expected to begin at the end of 2019.
