Apple has been criticized after the release of its two new high-end models, iPhone Xs and iPhone Xs Max, because the Internet has dubbed "Beautygate". An error, not a function
The reason why the images taken with the iPhone X and the iPhone Xs Max should have received what looked like a beauty filter because the mobile phone software did not work as expected.
The new mobiles use a feature that Apple has dubbed Smart HDR, which can only be turned off very deeply in the settings of the mobile camera.
With Smart HDR, the camera will always take more pictures of the subject than you point in several different exposures. The camera then uses the information of all the variations of the image to merge it into a single image.
The "Beautygate" error causes the Smart HDR function to select the "bad image". Instead of using the picture taken with the shortest shutter speed, which contains the sharpest details, the new iPhones use an image at the shutter speed longer, which makes the smallest details a little fuzzy.
Since the front camera also does not have an optical image stabilization such as rear cameras, in addition to smaller sensors, the problem is more noticeable on images taken with the front camera .
Fixed in iOS 12.1
The error needs to be corrected in iOS 12.1, where cameras select the "basic image" as sharply as possible when taking HDR images. That's how it would have been from the beginning.
iOS 12.1 is in open beta and will probably be released soon.
