"A Ciambra" was presented in world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in 2017, where he won the award for Best European Film for Europe Cinema Label. The film was also chosen to represent Italy's best foreign films at the Oscars in 2018. The story is contemporary as it portrays the lives of Romans and African refugees in a society that reacts with disgust and suspicion .
Director Jonas Carpignano has chosen inexperienced actors to play versions of himself. It's a good grip. Through handheld camera movements in a true documentary style, the action is followed by the eyes of Pio (Pio Amato) fourteen years old. It gives a credible insight into the life of a group outside the Italian community. Pio is sometimes a boy of a few words, but body language still represents a day full of inner conflicts.

The action takes place in the small town of Ciambra, on the outskirts from Gioia Tauro, in southern Italy. We have a glimpse of a family life with the free flow of alcohol, unavoidable passive smoking and noisy conversations. Pio makes fun of herself and aspires to adulthood as early as the age of fourteen. When the older brother Cosmio (Damiano Amato) and Father Rocco (Rocco Amato) end up in prison, he tries to fill the role of family guardian. At the same time it is torn between two worlds. Should he be young and irresponsible, like his younger brother, or become a real man with the following obligations?

With good help from the African Ayviva Refuge ( Koudous Seihon) Pio to raise money for bills that are still flowing. Pio and Ayiva were presented for the first time in the film "Mediterranea" (2015, also directed by Carpignano), which deals with the flight of African refugees across the Mediterranean and meets Italian society. In Ayviva, he has a faithful friend who always settles down and becomes a sort of father figure for the young man. When father and brother are released from prison, Pio faces a dilemma when he has to choose between family loyalty or friendship from Ayviva. Here too, his sweet side appears, as it is otherwise produced as an intact chess game.

Although the film highlights the typical stereotypes of Romanian life, it does not seem judicial. The director Carpignano gave a voice to a minority group that is often not heard in the company today. Despite difficult circumstances and criminal acts, we sympathize with the characters.
Only one thing is screaming; an initial love story that is punctured as fast as it is presented. It is possible to symbolize Pio's first journey to the realm of manhood, but to my eyes the story had been so strong without.
