(Nettavisen 🙂 Test: Mercedes G63 AMG
The good thing
Crazy a lot better than the predecessor in every way
A surplus of power of which you are almost afraid
One of the best off-road vehicles on the market
First class interior
A car with a very special character
The bad thing
Still not a sophisticated car
The audio system of our test car was worse than at Mercedes
The rear seat does not impress
Closing the doors always requires more power than you think, so you must almost always try twice
This cruel
Complete impossible to defend with reason
In 1990, there was a relatively large version of the Mercedes G-Class, better known as Geländewagen, essentially based on a car launched in 1979.
This is an important step when Mercedes has officially officially entered the second generation of one of the most iconic cars on the market.
You must of course look a bit to see where visual the changes are in place. The new G-Class is obviously similar to the car it replaces. It still looks like a wheeled box.
But almost everything is new. The car is more than 5 centimeters long, more than 12 centimeters wide and slightly higher. And the interior has raised many, many, many nicks from the previous generation. It is now based largely on the same interior that you can find in the E-Class – and its weight is also greatly reduced.
The only thing that is really recognizable is the incredible riot when you close the doors of the car. Here, there is no "soft closing", and you must use an approximate power to properly shut the fools.
Much, much better to drive
Using the previous generation of the G-Class was what we liked or hated. I must be honest to say that I never became a fan: it was – and I had the impression of being – an old all-terrain car. The steering sound was direct, the steering wheel was always turning a lot longer than what seemed natural and the base did not show its best side on a normal road.
The new generation is something completely different. More importantly, the sound of management has become much better, and you will not have to feel the need to close a submarine door every time you move.
You're still in a very high car with a big game, but the driving characteristics are just another world. There is no point in describing them, it's like day and night. You drive a big SUV, not an old truck.
Sound insulation is also in a completely different category than before.
It is not said that it is sophisticated, because it is not under any circumstances. We are talking about a car that always rolls well in turns and certainly has a bit of work to do to eliminate the worst mistakes on the road.
But on the other hand: there is hardly any other car on the market that manages to get off the road, blocking all three – if you wish.
A totally absurd motorisation
Our test car is the rear version: the AMG edition with a 4-liter V8 biturbo engine.
It's the same as the GLC 63S, but in the G63, the engine delivers 585 horsepower and 850 Nm of torque.
It is impossible to emphasize sufficiently the absurdity. Because even though the car has been significantly better than its predecessor, you are sitting high, you have a lot of weight – and the weight is high. 0-100 is applied to the paper in 4.5 seconds. We believe that.
During a kick, it will hit a relatively good car rather than trying to deploy all its forces in the ground. The speed is such that you do not expect a car that still looks to be 30 years old.
While drunkenness takes you, keep in mind that speed can not be taken with swings in full swing: you can get it fast enough.
We have already mentioned a Mini Cooper S as a kind of wild fly. G63 is nothing like that. It's more like an angry nose horn attacking.
The result is that you sit with a very impressive off-roader with an acceleration out of the wild world of sports cars, while getting a Model X to look like a match. And then all this is surmounted by a rather luxurious interior.
Some of the most politically incorrect you can find
This will not happen, except that the G63 is a car that fascinates you a bit, it's so crazy, overwhelming, brutal and frenetic that it takes you to some sort of urine.
At the same time, there is a car as politically incorrect as it is possible to become one. Make sure to sit down with a representative of the environmental movement and convince them that you are actually need This car uses dangerous nearly two liters per mile in normal use.
This can not be done. But you quickly forget your own sense of ignorance when driving on an eco-friendly, vegan recycled bike, while your ears are filled with the finest V8 sound that only AMG can produce. Of course, the Burmester sound system does its best to shine through the noise barrier.
Of course, you do it in a sitting position that is not optimal because the child seat has a little space in the files – which, in all honesty, is a bit too small for the purpose.
The rear seat is perfect for most people, but you often need a lot of space in front if you have large child seats.
Inspire a new generation
As part of childcare only tests, I took my 3 year old daughter to the garage, where she heard the sound of the engine.
Activated with sport mode. Down the window. Gas Hostel.
– More daddy! More!
A little later, we were back in the same place with a much more sensitive car with a 4-cylinder gasoline engine.
– Bring a little dad. Brumle!
Obviously, she remembered what had happened in G63. I have therefore tried to recreate this moment. Down the window. Hostel with sport mode. Gas Hostel.
– That does not bother, dad. It's boring.
It's a bit sad to think that she will grow up in a world of electric motors.
On the other hand, paying 2.5 million euros for this car is out of reach today anyway. The purest air is a good substitute.
