The Södra Älvsborg Relief Service Federation in Sweden posted a video on Facebook that is now being broadcast on social media. The video focuses on drowning and is a warning to all parents who are on the beach with the kids.
– Leaving mobile phones on the beach is a clear warning and encouragement.
In May and June, five children were drowned in Sweden as much as in 2017, reports Aftonbladet.
52 drowned so far this year
During the first six months of the year, 52 people died as a result of drowning, as against 38 during the same period in 2017, according to recent figures from the rescue company.
Just two weeks ago, a nine-year-old boy died of Fredrikstad as a result of a drowning accident.
– The figures are dramatic and less pleasant to read. This is due to a number of factors, but the main reason is that more people are sinking when we have record heat for so long. Many have bought a boat, but forget that it requires a minimum of knowledge and sea travel, says Frode Pedersen, director of communications at the Rescue Company.
Two authors are children under 14 years
15 drownings – 12 men, two women and one child – occurred in June, compared with ten in the same month last year. So far this year, 46 men and six women have drowned.
Two of the authors are children under 14, while ten are between 15 and 25 years old. In the age group of 26 to 40 years, six people drowned and twelve were between 41 and 60 years old. 19 of those killed were 61 or older.
27 people drowned after landing or brewing in the river, sea or water. 13 people drowned by boat, kayak or windsurfing while four people drowned.
Hedmark is the only county without drowning in 2018. Hordaland leads the statistics with seven drownings followed by Trøndelag and Sogn og Fjordane with five drownings. Rogaland, Buskerud and Møre og Romsdal have four drownings.
