Technology is still developing

Currently, Telenor has installed three 5G base stations in Kongsberg, about 1.5 kilometers from each other.

They operate at relatively high frequencies (3.5 and 1.8 GHz), which offer good capacity but a relatively short signal range. In the future, it appears that you are using lower frequencies than you would use elsewhere in the cellular network.

While Verizon, in the United States, launched a 5G service this fall that provides wireless broadband in some US cities, the technology is still in development.

"The standards continue to evolve and we had to work a little bit to get all the material needed for this pilot test," said Telenor's new technology director, Ingeborg Øfsthus.

For example, there are still no mobile phones compatible with 5G. Telenor, Verizon, and other players are now using modems and modules that provide pure data connectivity over the 5G network only.

"We expect the handsets will be available by the end of 2019, but we find that mobile manufacturers are always bringing news," she continued.

According to the director of technology, the 5G network also requires a major upgrade of the core network, namely the infrastructure behind each base station, although significant investment in the fiber and the l '. infrastructure have already been realized as part of the construction of the 4G network.

Europe's fears are coming back

Like his predecessor, Jon Fredrik Baksaas, Sigve Brekke also fears that Europe will find itself in the race for technologies in progress in the mobile sector.
