ECONOMY , EMPLOYMENT – Immigrants in the construction sector are most often injured on the job

Small-scale immigrants are four times more often injured on the job than Norwegians. They are more exposed to harmful noises, dust, smoke, gases and vapors.

The figures are presented in a new report from the Norwegian Authority for Labor Inspection and the Norwegian Institute of Occupational Health and Safety (STAMI).

It shows that craft immigrants often report health problems compared to Norwegian artisans. In addition, they report more often than they get up in uncomfortable positions and stand up, and that they can take breaks less often. The majority of craftsmen work in construction.

"The report shows that immigrant artisans are more exposed than Norwegians, and employers and those hiring immigrants or foreign workers need to be more effective in preventing and reducing the risks of this group," said Trude Vollheim, director of Labor inspection.

Building and construction is one of the sectors with the highest number of accidents at work and accidents at work, all workers under one year of age. The report shows that the number of reported damage in the construction and construction sectors has declined somewhat in recent years, but remains slightly above the average for all industries.

The Labor Inspectorate recorded 27 deaths among the Norwegian labor force in Norway last year. Six of the dead were foreign citizens.
