Equinor and fire department smoke divers are working to locate a leak in the LNG facility from Melkøya to Hammerfest.
Police were informed of Equinor's escape at 10:26 pm Saturday.
"They tried to locate the leak, without that happening," said Svein Erik Jacobsen, director of operations, of the Finnmark Police District at NTB.
The operations manager says that it might be relevant to evacuate the facility. He does not want to know how many employees will be evacuated.
The agencies have implemented emergency preparedness in accordance with the plan, the police said.
The Melkøya facility houses and processes liquefied natural gas (LNG), natural gas in Norwegian from the Snøhvit deposit in the Barents Sea, according to Equinor on its web pages.
