The German electronics pioneers gave Friday a concert to 7000 fans on the Stuttgart Schlossplatz. Then Gerst (42) unexpectedly appeared in a direct transfer from ISS
– ISS is a "Mensch-Maschine", Gerst said, referring to one of Kraftwerks' albums.
– The most complicated and most valuable machine of humanity ever built, the German astronaut and geophysicist continued. Then he played "Spacelab" on a specially programmed PC with the band and sang a duet with Ralf Hütter. So he took goodbye with the words "good evening, earth."
Gerst is not the first musician in space. Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield recorded a version of David Bowie's "Space Oddity" on ISS and also played Duet with the Barenaked Ladies band on 400 miles in 2013.
In 1986, the American astronaut Ron McNair had planned to play saxophone with Frenchman Jean Michel Jarre on the ground, but died in the Challenger accident before the plan could be realized.
