Loaded the car from the normal electrical outlet

The number of electric cars and rechargeable cars in Norway has been in recent years. Although helped by favorable taxes (none for electric cars) and a number of benefits, more and more Norwegians have switched to electric driving.

But that also poses problems. Rechargeable electric and hybrid cars must be charged. Many choose the simplest solution here and leave an ordinary point of sale at home. However, this can have fatal consequences.

Someone who has experienced it is the married couple Johanna and Michael Olson of Sunne, in Värmland.

You come from underwear

Earlier this year, they woke up in the morning with a loud explosion. Then they discovered that their house was on fire.

The married couple woke the children and came out at full speed. Just dressed in lingerie, they stood up and saw that their house was surrounded by flames.

Firefighters quickly arrived, but it was already late.

Worked well for several months …

On the outside of the carport was their car, a rechargeable Kia Optima for recharging. Suspicion was quick that the fire could have started there.

A little earlier, the couple had experienced the fuse when he had loaded the car using the washing machine. As a result, they had a timer installed here, which started charging the car three hours a night.

"We never thought that it could start burning, we put the timer on and it worked well for several months, but that did not go well," says Johanna Olson at the Swedish channel. TV4.

Criticism to the dealer

Fire officials believe that the fire originated either in the outlet or by the timer connected to it. Some components did not tolerate the charge over time.

The married couple think they have not received enough information from the car dealership to state that it can be irresponsible to load the car into a usual point of sale.

"We were told that the loading was done everywhere, like on the phone," said Michael Olson.

Many owners of electric cars and plug-in hybrids can recognize each other, but in reality, this is certainly not the case.

Ståle Frydelund is Senior Advisor to the Norwegian Electric Vehicle Association. He advises the following people who leave their car at home:

Rechargeable cars are still a relatively new phenomenon. As a result, many homeowners may also ignore what can happen if they are not insured.

Get a wall box

"First of all, it's a matter of properly maintaining the grounded household connector and getting an appropriate wall cabinet. You can sleep well at night, confident that there is no case of fire,
or a fire extinguisher, using such a charging station with a so-called type 2 connector. We believe that the safety and efficiency of the wall boxes obviously defend the investment. Therefore, we are also making an extra effort in the Electric Vehicle Association
to make the loading boxes more financially available to our members, explains Frydenlund.

He adds:

– The safety of the load is extremely important and a fire is always a fire too much. Therefore, it is important for us to know how people should charge their electric cars and plug-in hybrids in the safest possible way. If a household comes into contact with someone
In this case, you must upgrade the path with a Type B earth fault and provide a fuse of 10A maximum.

Same thing for the electric car and the plug-in hybrid

– Does this mean that you should never load a regular point of sale?

"We mean that it's okay to" nail down "as we call it, rarely, using a regular point of sale – for example, when traveling or when you visit. The power outlet is in good condition.
Check the switch for heating after 1-2 hours. If you feel uncomfortable warm; unplug the plug and put the pins. If you burn your fingers, the charge must be completed immediately, says Frydenlund.

– Are there differences here in terms of recharging electric cars or plug-in hybrids?

– No it is not. You must, however, make sure that you have a safe solution if you leave your home often or daily. In addition, owners of rechargeable hybrids leave more often than electricians – simply because batteries
are small.

The first kilometers are cheap – it will be more expensive

This solution is probably common to many electric cars or rechargeable hybrids. But this can have few scary consequences.

Avoid extensions

Frydenlund also encourages relieve the "current" on the charger cable in a hook hooked to the wall so that it is not hooked directly to the grounded plug (it is only approved for 0.5 kg of weight suspended). This can cause warming and melting.

– An uninterrupted rate of contact on the cover is a definite advantage; that is, the cable does not pass through the junction boxes or feeds other devices that draw electricity from the same path. This could cause overheating, fuses failures and interruption of the load.
There is also an open question as to the quality of the timer between the wall socket and the charging cable; in the Swedish case, the quality was good enough. This is a potentially weak joint and should be avoided – like extension cords,
finish Ståle Frydenlund.
