The sale of genetic self-tests on the internet is growing rapidly. The Gene Technology Council wants to forbid parents to perform genetic tests on their own children.

In 2017, 7 million of these tests were sold worldwide, a doubling compared to the previous year. According to the Biotechnology Council, several companies are directing their marketing to parents who want to know more about the genetic conditions of their children, who now believe that repetition of children should only be allowed in health care.

– Children should have the right to choose the knowledge that they want to have on their own genes when they reach the age of 16 and health authorities. If we want to guarantee children the right to an open future, a clear ban must be introduced to reiterate children outside the health service, "said Kristin Halvorsen, Chair of the Biotechnology Council.

The Norwegian authorities have made it clear that self-tests are not regulated by the Biotechnology Act, but that it is forbidden to test others in their backs. What is, however, little discussed, according to the Council, is whether parents should be able to test their own children.

– The debate on the new Biotechnology Act has shown that there is a broad political consensus that the consideration of children should be heavy. This intention should be followed by a clear and clear prohibition, "says Halvorsen.
