Not intended for dangerous and illegal electric bicycles

The roadside warns against illegal electric bicycles that can ride as fast as mopeds or motorcycles. However, they do not give priority to their control.

– There are those who look like ordinary electric bicycles, but they are powerful like mopeds or motorcycles, "says Tormod Schau, chief engineer of the Norwegian Public Roads Administration at NRK.

More and more Norwegians are choosing to buy an electric bike. When Are Ertzeid, the general manager of Bicycle Picks, was interviewed by Finansavisen earlier this year, he described the sale as follows:

– An explosion like no other.

Last year, the Norwegian Electric Vehicle Association published an overview of the number of electric bikes sold in Norway. It shows an increase from just under 15,000 electric bikes sold in 2014 to 36,000 in 2016.

According to NRK, the Norwegian Public Roads Administration has registered more advertisements for illegal electric bicycles in second-hand markets and foreign websites. Nevertheless, they do little or no control with electric bikes.

– We carry out a very limited control of e-bikes. Traditionally, we have prioritized heavy and light cars in our controls. E-bikes are also new to the traffic, which is an explanation, "says Elisa Eyland Brandsås, Acting Director of the Norwegian Public Roads Administration Control Department.

Electric bicycles must meet the same requirements as ordinary bicycles. In addition, the power of the auxiliary engine and its operation must be determined

The auxiliary engine should not have a power greater than 0.25 kW.

The engine only provides energy when the cyclist is walking on the pedals or using the armrest for the arms.

Only the engine can propel up to 6 kilometers per hour, so-called start-up assistance.

The auxiliary engine turns off when the motorcycle reaches a speed of 25 kilometers per hour or earlier if the cyclist stops walking.

Electric bicycles can be used in the same places as ordinary bicycles.

Can end the bad

Tormod Schau tells NRK that the roadside warns of electric bikes that are moving fast. For an electric bike to be legal, the engine can not exceed 250 watts.

In May of last year, a man collided with a woman while driving a specially powered electric bike on a bike path. The woman was broken in the neck and the concussion. When the Norwegian Administration of Public Roads checked the electric vehicle, they assumed that the maximum speed was 108 km / h on flat ground.

In court, the man explained that he had paid 60.00 crowns for the electric motorcycle online and that he did not know that it had an effect greater than the authorized one.
