Last year was a celebration of many investors who rely on companies listed on the Oslo Stock Exchange. The main index produced a very strong return and the stock market was characterized by very little turbulence.
Private investor Haakon Sæter (54) from Fredrikstad did not experience his best year last year. Since the early 2000s, he has invested in stocks and earned a lot of money, but last year, many companies have had a lot of money.
This translates into a pre-tax loss of NOK 19 million in its two investment companies, Silvercoin Industries and Six-Seven. In 2016, the same result in investment companies generated a profit of more than 120 million NOK.
– There is no party figure. But it's like that when you have a wallet, so it can work both ways. According to Sæter, the previous year was much better. At the beginning of the year, it held about NOK 160 million in both companies.
Weak year for the next biometrics
Fredrikstad Investor pulls the next biometrics as one of the biggest losers. Overall, the fingerprinting company's share was 55% over Oslo Børs last year.
Next Biometrics develops and sells sensors for the authentication of fingerprints. The sensors are used in mobile phones, digital laptops, contactless smart cards and access control solutions.
It does not seem to get rid of the investment.
– It's a company I've been in for a long time and in which I believe. It has a large sensor that is important for security to be high enough on smart cards and so I think there will be contracts in this segment, says Sæter.
At the end of last year, Sæter went through Silvercoin Industries and privately 667,333 Next The biometric shares were then worth about 40 million NOK at the end of the year. The same shares were worth NOK 88 million at the beginning of last year.
Sæter bought back this year, including the purchase of 4,349 new shares last week, according to the shareholders' auditors.
"Important to keep calm."
The Napatech technology company and Element cryptogenic company also lowered the value of Sæter's portfolio last year.

– I'm on the same trail this year, Sæter says.
The 54-year-old man is not worried that the result is negative and says that he thinks long-term.
– I have a 70/30% distribution between long term investments and shorter term securities trading. As long as you've done an analysis and believe in a scenario, it's important to stay calm. Even though you can buy and sell multiple times, my experience tells me that it gives the best return over time, he says.
Thinking of continued growth
Among the companies that gave Sæter a good performance are Gentian Diagnostics. In the last three months, the diagnostic business has grown by 61% at the cost of 64 million NOK. Sæter is the sixth largest shareholder with 589,780 shares
– I'm not surprised. It's a very exciting company that you should sit for a long time, says the investor.
He does not think the recovery will stop with the first one. Sæter estimates that the price will reach 5,000 crowns, which means that the investor Fredrikstad's participation will increase by several billion when he gets the right.
However, he assumes that one of the products takes up large market shares abroad, according to Sæter.
– They have many shots on the targets and they bring new products now. If you hit one of the products in big segments, it will be a lot of money, he says.
Sæter seems that the stock market today is difficult.
– Large companies are doing well, while many small businesses are falling. I'm right and I try to do smart things, but it's not so simple, he says (Terms)
