TEST: Hyundai Nexo – We drove the electric car that has its own power plant

This is the Hyundai ix35 fuel cell, which now has its successor in the form of Nexo. It was shown in Las Vegas in January after being shown in the form of the next-generation fuel cell vehicle prototype.

In addition to the new hydrogen car, they already have a hybrid, a plug-in hybrid and an electric car on the market and come with another, Kona Electric – which we just got from 39; try. We will come back in a short time

The three variants of Hyundai Ioniq, named Car of the Year in Norway in 2017. And now, not only the electric car, Kona, but also that of sister Kia , the latter, Niro Electric, we mentioned in January

The source of energy in the car is therefore the fuel cell, which generates energy and supplies the power line with energy. This happens with a small 1.56 kWt lithium-ion battery, which can produce 40 kilowatts of power. The fuel cell provides 95 kilowatts. The electric motor that drives the wheels has a maximum power of 163 horsepower and a torque of 395 newton meters.

We find that this is nothing more than giving the 1.8 ton heavy SUV a decent performance on the road. 0 to 100 kilometers, depending on the manufacturer, will take 9.5 seconds.

Medium SUV

Design, we believe that Hyundai has achieved much better than its predecessor, with rounded and harmonious shapes such as reflects the efforts that have been made to make the air resistance as low as possible. The car is relatively large with 467 centimeters in length – pretty much like the Mitsubishi Outlander, 186 wide and 164 centimeters tall above a clearance of 279 centimeters.

"FLIGHT DECK": The massive console is filled with a multitude of buttons that serve the different systems of the car and also a rotating wheel to select the features on the screen central 12.3 inches. To the left of the wheel, we find even more buttons. Ecological materials in the seats, the door panel and the steering wheel. Photo: Hyundai

Although installed behind the wheel, we notice that the front of the front does not feel as good as the outer dimensions should indicate, but we are comfortable and the driving environment is not the flashy in the early times of hydrogen. The rear seats are spacious also for adults. In addition, the luggage with its 461 liters is spacious. For example, it's 100 liters more than in the Toyota Mirai.

Smarter than the predecessor

the car as a hydrogen car from the beginning, unlike the # 39; iX35. Thus, it was possible to imagine a smart placement of the many elements that make up the course of such a car. Among other things, it was chosen to use three hydrogen tanks of the same size instead of two, which would require more space in height.

Hyundai makes a number of use of organic / organic materials inside a little unusual to feel certain elements give the touch.

Many buttons!

Otherwise, the quality of hard plastic is not overwhelming, but the dashboard has soft padding. We appreciate the digital dashboard display that provides continuity between the dashboard and the driver-centric multimedia screen.

But unlike many manufacturers who have streamlined buttons for screen-based solutions, it's a big thank you, the philosophy that has been used. Here are two digital displays, spinning wheels – and a host of controls. It may take time for new owners to get used to it.

Nexo is furthermore equipped with a multitude of security and assistance systems that make it self propelled to so-called level four. It can thus keep the distance to the surrounding cars, keep the backrest or change folder automatically when it is safe, and park automatically from the outside of the car.

Delayed driving experience

When we set out with the new hydrogen SUV, it turns out that the "normal" car is known. The drive line does not produce audible sound except on the application, and the car is otherwise soundproofed. The entire driving experience is characterized by softness and driving comfort is excellent.

However, the car does not like being in a hurry, and we notice that the car is heavy and that it is set for comfort, not on sportsmanship. In other words, it pays to embark on a style of driving under sedation, which is enough, but not impressive.

Best Hydrocar Till Now

Overall, this Nexo seems to be an accomplished product and well thought out, with the limitations of such a complex technology. However, the hydrogen technology is undoubtedly mature permanently, the safety tests of all the components make that the manufacturer is in total safety.

The transmission period is 10 years or 160,000 kilometers.

It is also promised that the car can now be started even at temperatures below 30 degrees less. And the range is without a doubt the best we've seen now. The advantage over battery cars is obvious: it takes five minutes to think about the six kilograms of hydrogen that go into the three minds, and then you have reach again.

L & # 39; drawback? Well, the development of a complete network of hydrogen filling stations will be waiting, and UnoX, the player in addition to Hynor, will depend on the support of Enova. Today, there is one UnoX station in the Oslo area (Sandvika) and another in Bergen, and funding is planned for three more: one on Hvam north of Oslo, one in in Bergen and one in Ås south of Oslo.

] Will it take off?

One may wonder why a new hydrogen car is being launched – it obviously required significant investment and it has been many years since the market began to take off around 2015. Indeed, hit the sale of all these discs in Norway last year – but after all, only 55 pieces were recorded in 2017, of which 38 Hyundai ix35. And the trend has slowed down so far this year, with only 22 hydrogen cars registered in the first half, but only the Toyota Mirai sedan has been on the market until now in 2018.

That took a lot longer than expected 20 years ago, but there are signs that hydrogen will still be able to have its chance in the auto industry, despite the fact that cars battery-powered batteries are really making a breakthrough a few times ten years ago

Many manufacturers still have faith, which emerges from a comprehensive study of the KPMG company's analysis company published a few months ago. It indicates that the future trend, considered the most important by 2025, is just that of fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEV), as are hydrogen cars

The power line is electric and electricity comes from a power plant. stack of fuel cells. where the cells bring together the hydrogen of a confined tank and air – which by a kind of reverse electrolysis ends up in the water and electrical energy.

The power then drives the electric motor, as in an electric battery with only one battery. However, here the battery does not need to be recharged remotely – it is charged with the electricity produced by the power plant. Instead of charging the battery, you add hydrogen to the tank. The water is the only dump used

And now it is the screen of a new stage in the adventure of hydrogen that lasted a long time. The price of just under 600,000 crowns does not make the car very cheap, but it is well equipped and the customer can at least claim the status of very little.
