Expectations are clear for many MPs: when the election campaign begins in earnest with a debate of party leaders in Arendal on Monday, Siv Jensen should give new answers on how the government should deal with the revolt.

But when asked if there was any reason to expect a solution by Monday, left leader Trine Skei Grande sent the ball back.

– You have to ask Frp about it. We have a budget process for which we need to find good conclusions. We give priority to the environment and climate, "said Mr. Grande, referring to the government's budget conference in late August.

– No, I hope not. I hope we will rely on the Granavolden declaration and find good solutions in the budget next year. This is our starting point.

– Is there a toll crisis in Norway?

– No, we do not have a toll crisis. We are facing the hottest July in history, the ice of Greenland melts at a furious pace, we are witnessing a race, torrential rains and a miserable nature around us. That's what the crisis is.

– What would you say to people who find it too expensive to drive to work or to young people for leisure activities?

– I would say to them: we must become even more effective in finding alternatives.

– So they have to leave the car?

– We need to move from the freedom of thinking from sitting at the wheel to climbing on a "moving sidewalk", said Mr. Grande, pointing out that buses, trams and railways have to move so often that he travelers do not need to look at the calendar.

Pointing to frp

For the left, it is important to fence the packets of the city. For Frp, it is important to reduce the toll charge.

– Is it not just about putting more money on the table and making sure that the state assumes more responsibility for funding these programs?

– In Oslo, we went from 0 to 50% of state funding, so that anyone who says we should just allocate more money, simply says: we have really done it.

– But again, in the next budget?

– We probably want to increase from 50 to 70% the financing of the state in the next national transport plan. But we have not yet seen the possibility of doing so within the budget. So it's what you give priority, says Grande and continues:

– Up to now, we have solved the problem by increasing the state funding share to 50%. We think it's great. It is the others who must then propose other solutions. We have a policy that works – we see cities changing.

In an interview with NTB, the proposal put forward by MP Carl I. Hagen regarding the use of oil money to halve the rights of development, largely contributed to reject it.

– More queuing

The FRP also has the requirement to redefine the goal of zero growth of car traffic in cities, so that it is based on actual emissions rather than the number of vehicles. This is the reason why many zero emission vehicles have become so popular.

But Grande will not accept such a model either.

– I think it's a little strange that Frp does not think the queue is a bigger problem than mine. I think the queue is a huge problem. It irritates people and causes them to arrive late, that the goods do not arrive and that the craftsmen do not work.

– This is the goal of zero growth: to fight the queues and encourage the growth of traffic to other modes of transport. And it works – the queues go down! Our cities have grown by tens of thousands, but traffic has not increased, she said.

– In this area, the left is very satisfied with the policy pursued by the government. Why should you give Frp here?

– We have finished negotiations on the Granavolden. We do not want to create problems for others, but it is clear that these projects need to be implemented. The problem is that some urban packages lack funding, because our policy has worked so well: the share of electric cars increases much more than expected.

– Much defeated

The participation rate on the left was 2.7% on the average polls in June. This represents a slight increase from the 2.2% recorded in March, but remains far from the party's goal.

– I think we should be able to reverse the situation, ready to mobilize. The measurements before the summer showed that the situation was about to turn around, says Grande.

She herself has held the position of leader of the left since 2010. Vice Presidents Ola Elvestuen and Terje Breivik have been part of the trio of leaders since 2008 and 2012. They must all be elected in the national elections next year.

– Do you need a renewal at the top of the party?

– I suggest we discuss at the national meeting.

Per A. Thorbjørnsen, chairman of the nomination committee, recently told Dagens Næringsliv that the renewal was under discussion.

– I'm waiting for an election committee to discuss such things. This is the job of the election committee. Beyond that, I have no comment on a rumor that anyone would have heard anyone who should have said anything.

– Do you want to continue as a leftist for several years?

– I want to succeed our project. It's about putting in place a climate policy that allows our country to stay ahead. I have a lot to do as a Minister of Culture.

– Do you still have much as a party leader?

– Yes, I have a lot to do as a party leader. I have been building the organization for a very long time and I actually think I am very good too.
