Members of the Norwegian beach handball team criticized the sport’s governing body on Wednesday after being fined for their decision to wear shorts instead of the required bikini bottoms.

The European Handball Federation fined the team $ 1,770 – around $ 177 per player – for choosing to wear shorts in their bronze medal match against Spain. The organization said the players violated uniform requirements set by the International Handball Federation (IHF).

Two Norwegian players appeared on ITV’s “Lorraine” and expressed frustration with the rule. The players said there was “no good reason” for the players to wear bikinis to participate in the sport.

“For our federation there has been a lot of support,” said Tonya Lurstaad. “All the other federations too – except the ones that set the rules – have supported us. We are very grateful for the support.”

She added: “We have just been told that this is the rule.”

Julia Bird said the team gained support from the men in the row.

“People were quite shocked that women today in 2021 can’t choose what to wear. It’s actually overwhelming,” she added.

Lurstaad said there really was no reason they couldn’t compete with a t-shirt and shorts.

“If guys can do it in t-shirts and shorts, we should be able to do it in the exact same outfit.”

IHF rules require women to wear bikini bottoms in competition.

“The Beach Handball EURO 2021 Disciplinary Commission has dealt with a case of inappropriate clothing,” the governing body said. “In the bronze medal match against Spain on Sunday, the Norwegian team played with shorts that do not comply with the Athlete Uniform Regulations set out in the IHF Beach Handball Rules of the Game “,

The Norwegian Handball Federation agreed to pay the fines imposed on the players and expressed their support for them.

“We are very proud of these girls who are at the European Beach Handball Championships. They raised their voices and told us enough is enough,” said the organization.

“We are the Norwegian Handball Federation and we are supporting you and supporting you. We will continue to fight to change international dress regulations, so players can play in clothes they are comfortable with. “
