Not great, Tom: Brady shakes the brand's nickname

Like many athletes of all time, Tom Brady has a handful of affectionate nicknames.

Touch Tom. Comeback Kid. And, Tom Terrific.

Of course, nicknames are not unique and are not owned by anyone. Unless you are trying to make money, of course. And that's what pushed the new QB Patriots of New England into hot water with some fans.

For some, especially New York Mets fans, "Tom Terrific" will always be former Cy Young Award winner Tom Seaver.

But last month, Brady's company – TEB Capital – filed a trademark application for this nickname, with the intention of selling merchandise using it. The Mets and their fans were offended by the commercial adventure.

So, Seaver had his nickname even before the birth of Brady and had won 311 career games. But Brady seems to be content with the weight of his six rings Super Bowl.

Seaver himself has never filed a mark, but is it really necessary?

Maybe we could have a feud between Lawrence Taylor and LaDainian Tomlinson about "LT" or Andy Roddick and Alex Rodriguez about "A-Rod," or Michael Johnson can challenge Michael Jordan to race against "MJ ". Or … or, or not.
